What Is Courageous Curiosity and Why Every Leader Needs It
Curiosity is the spark. Courage is the oxygen. Goals are the fuel.
In 2025, manager engagement fell to 22% globally—the steepest drop of any workforce group. The people responsible for engaging everyone else are disengaging fastest. That's not a training gap. It's an operating system failure. And it's why all the books, programs, and frameworks haven't stuck.
Most leaders don't have a skill problem. They have a courageous curiosity leadership operating system problem.

Why Leadership Programs Aren't Working

You've done the training. You've read the books. You've sat through the workshops. And yet—here you are. Still reacting. Still burning out. Still not getting the culture or results you were promised.
You're not alone. Gartner surveyed 1,403 HR leaders and found that 75% of organizations have made significant updates to their leadership development programs, and more than half are increasing spending on leader development. They are not seeing results. Mark Whittle, VP of Gartner HR research, put it plainly: "Though 75% of organizations have made significant updates to their leadership development programs, and more than half are increasing spending on leader development, they are not seeing results."
Here's what's missing. Most programs teach you what to think and what to do. They target the prefrontal cortex—the rational, decision-making part of the brain. But under pressure, the brain defaults to the limbic system, where automatic patterns live. You're running new apps on a corrupted operating system.
Courageous Curiosity℠ doesn't layer better responses on top of a reactive default. It upgrades the OS itself—from defense to design.

What Courageous Curiosity Actually Is

Courageous Curiosity℠ is the operating system that lets you lead by design instead of by default. It's choosing to stay genuinely curious about what you might be missing and being courageous enough to act on what you discover—all while leading toward something bigger than the situation right in front of you.
This is not casual curiosity. This is not the "be curious" advice showing up in every leadership program right now. This curiosity is a disciplined inquiry that replaces assumption with understanding. It's an intentional, strategic choice to ask better questions that expand understanding, surface assumptions, and reveal what's missing.
And knowing you should stay curious is not enough. The antidote to a reactive operating system is not a training program or a reminder on your phone. It's courage. Courage in this context is the willingness to tolerate discomfort in the service of better outcomes.
Curiosity is the spark. Courage is the oxygen. Goals are the fuel. Together, they create FIRE.

The R³ Execution Engine

R³℠ (Reflect, Reframe, Respond) is the execution engine of Courageous Curiosity℠—the practical, repeatable leadership habit that makes the OS actionable in real time. Without R³℠, Courageous Curiosity℠ stays inside you—a better way of thinking that never fully becomes a better way of leading.
Reflect is the discipline of seeing clearly before you act. It's the pause that moves your brain from reaction to reality—surfacing what's true, what's assumed, what's missing, and what's at stake. Most leaders think they're reflecting when they're actually ruminating or justifying. Real reflection doesn't protect a story. It surfaces truth.
Reframe is a deliberate shift from problem to possibility, beyond the immediate issue. It takes what Reflect surfaced and expands what success can be—in both quantity and quality. It moves you from WIIFM (What's In It For Me) to WIIFUS (What's In It For Us).
Respond is the conscious choice to take what Reflect revealed and what Reframe redefined, and act to accomplish multi-faceted goals. Reaction is fast and self-protective. Response is intentional and outcome-oriented.

What Changes When You Lead by Design

When Courageous Curiosity℠ is running, leaders gain clarity in complexity, make faster and better decisions with less fatigue, and develop genuine empathy—understanding another person's "why" rather than just their behavior.
At the team level, alignment grows because people finally share the same vision. Engagement, buy-in, and collaboration increase because people feel heard before they are led.
At the organizational level, Courageous Curiosity℠ establishes a shared operating system where consistent behavior—not heroics—drives results. First-pass quality improves. Capacity grows. Velocity increases without burnout. Delegation becomes natural at higher levels because decision rights and guardrails are clear.
This isn't about being a different leader. It's about running a different system.

Lead by design. Not by default.

Audiences report enhanced clarity, confidence, and immediate application. In-person polling shows 100% of attendees would like to see Cheryle again, and 85% note enhanced clarity and confidence. Organizations see reduced rework, faster decisions, and stronger engagement.
7. What is Courageous Curiosity leadership?
Courageous Curiosity℠ leadership is an operating system that combines disciplined curiosity, quiet courage, and multi-faceted goals to shift leaders from reactive default to intentional design. It's not a mindset tip or soft skill—it's a practiced, chosen way of thinking, choosing, acting, and leading.
8. Why is curiosity critical for leadership?
Curiosity uncovers what's operating beneath the surface—what's driving people, what success actually looks like to them, and what's preventing them from bringing their best thinking into the room. When curiosity is present, a challenge becomes an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Emotions become data, not attacks.
9. Why is courage critical for leadership?
Courage is the willingness to tolerate discomfort in the service of better outcomes. It's the bravery to interrupt default reactions in the moment—to resist acting on emotion, avoid retreating from conversations, and refrain from retaliating when challenged. Curiosity shows you what's possible. Courage is what you do about it.
10. Why do leaders need both courage and curiosity?
Curiosity without courage stays in the realm of thought—it's safe exploration without action. Courage without curiosity can become reckless action without understanding. Together, they create combustion. Curiosity is the spark. Courage is the oxygen. Goals are the fuel. You need all three for FIRE.
11. How does the R³ framework help leaders?
R³℠ (Reflect, Reframe, Respond) is the execution engine that makes Courageous Curiosity℠ actionable in real time. Reflect surfaces truth. Reframe expands what success can be. Respond turns intention into purposeful action. Running this loop consistently minimizes reactive moments until the deliberate response becomes your new default.
12. What is the difference between reacting (leading by default) and responding (leading by design) as a leader?
Leading by default means your brain's autopilot runs the show—optimizing for safety, ease, and comfort. It's reactive, self-protective, and WIIFM-driven. Leading by design means being intentional—shifting focus outward to achieve goals greater than the situation at hand. It's people-focused, future-focused, and strategic. Default is survival. Design is success.
13. Why is manager engagement dropping so fast?
Gallup's 2026 State of the Global Workplace report shows manager engagement fell from 31% in 2022 to 22% in 2025—the steepest drop of any workforce group. Managers are being asked to navigate AI transformation, restructuring pressure, hybrid work enforcement, and team wellbeing simultaneously, often without adequate development or support.
14. What is a leadership operating system?
A leadership operating system is the underlying programming that shapes how you think, choose, act, and respond as a leader. It runs beneath every tool, framework, and conversation you have. Most leadership development tries to change behavior without changing the OS. Courageous Curiosity℠ upgrades the OS itself.
15. How do you stop reacting and start responding as a leader?
The 3-2-1 RESPOND℠ tool gives you an in-the-moment interrupt: 3 goals (Personal, People, Performance), 2 words (Courageous Curiosity), 1 choice (RESPOND). This creates a deliberate pause that re-engages your prefrontal cortex and activates your intentional operating system. Used consistently, it shortens the gap between trigger and choice.

Meet Cheryle Hays

I am a leadership and business activator, dynamic speaker, advisor and coach, with a purpose to encourage and equip leaders for success.  I bridge data-driven strategies with a people-first approach to prepare leaders and teams for this new AI-driven, paradigm-shifting world.
My 25+ years’ journey experience in male-dominated fields, reflects a "yes-and" career philosophy, embracing many varied roles culminating in the creation of InPower Strategists.   I am guided by my Christian values and commitment to ethical leadership in all I do, seeking to help others understand themselves, their choices, and their impact on others.  With my love of business, the natural outcome is to equip leaders, align teams, impact culture, engagement and the bottom line.
I'm a new author, currently working on a new book, working title "Aspire to Lead", laying out my philosophy and Leadership Success Model.  I was blessed when my first, co-authored book 'People Fusion' reached #1 top seller list in 10 Amazon categories'.   My motto, 'Be In-Powered to Be Empowering,' both defines this foundation, and the value individuals, teams companies and the world receive when we choose the right leadership.

3 Personal Things About Me:
Everyone has a life less ordinary, if only we look at it the right way.  My lies in my choice of the outcome I wanted, even in the face of the many un-welcome events that could have negatively impacted my life forever.  Everyone's journey is unique, as is what we do with it.  When people hire me, whether to help their company and teams, or for personal insight, no matter the products I sell, such as The Predictive Index, which I love, they are really hiring me, what I bring to the table, whether I can help solve their problem, make their load easier, and help them achieve the future they want.  So, I figured you should find out a little more about 'Cheryle'.  Here are three aspects of my character that help illustrate who I am, and why I strive to inspire those around me.
1.    My Pioneering Spirit:  I've been blessed to live a renaissance life, or, according to one of my favorite books, a "Yes, And" life. Striving to succeed in the 1990's, in male-dominated fields, coupled with my upbringing - nothing in that said "be more".  That came for my internal drive, even with others seeking to kill that aspect of me.  My initial response is always "yes, I can; then I figure out how,  Which means I also believe in using all the brains I have and all I can borrow.  2.    Persistent Curiosity & Evergreen Mindset:  I'm an enduring optimist, always seeking to uncover new possibilities, challenging myself and others to become more, do more, achieve more through breakthrough discovery, mindset change and choice.
3.    Adversity as a Catalyst: It's easy to stay a victim, so many do, but the rewards are so much greater when you move through victim, survivor, thriver and overcomer and realize those words still had me looking back, living only an "in spite of" life.  I choose to be a visionary, living my "because of, forward looking" life.

Now, for 3 Personal Things About Cheryle:
  1. I love my 1 husband, 2 kids, and my 2 1/2 cats, but am glad I have a sense of humor
  2. Great times require great people, but fine wine, fine food, fine chocolate (it worth a separate mention!) don't hurt!
  3. I use all of who I am and what I've learned, whether in business, with my husband, with my kids, with my friends, and when connecting with others.  You do too, whether you realize it or not, so it's a great thing that the people who love us have a sense of humor as well.
